Apple will release a new Apple TV in the first quarter of 2014. It will run on a new version of iOS operation system. With the redesigned OS, The Apple TV will be able to run its own apps and games rather than relying on iPhones and iPads via AirPlay.

For current Apple TV owners, there is good news. Games and other apps could be added to the current-gen Apple TV via a software update.

Apple TV with Voice & Hand Gestures

Apple could also experiment with new methods available for the TV, viewers can then control the TV by voice or hand gestures. It is unclear whether this get a Kinect-like interface. Apple bought a few months ago, the sensor manufacturer of PrimeSense, which also supplied the sensors for the Microsoft Kinect. The new Apple TV is still a set-top box like the current Apple TV, not to a HDTV or other type of TV set.

Apple has been long-rumored to launch a full-fledged TV, but it appears that plan is on hold. Instead, Apple is adding another much rumored feature, an official SDK for third party developers.

Do you think an App Store for the Apple TV would revolutionise software the same way the iOS App Store did? Let us know in the comments below.
